Stream Monitoring
The Lakes Council has partnered with UW-Oshkosh and UW-Extension to help recruit volunteer stream monitors.
The project was funded by the Wisconsin Citizen-Based Monitoring Partnership Program in April 2006. Training sessions were held in Menasha, Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, and Winneconne. Twenty-five volunteers were trained to monitor streams using methods developed by the Wisconsin Water Action Volunteers program. The Lakes Council helped recruit citizens and organize logistics for the Winneconne training session.
The project also gathered basic information on the 95 streams draining into the Winnebago Pool Lakes and set up equipment loan sites around the lakes. The streams were studied to determine which are large enough to run most of the year, the best and safest legal entry locations for monitors, and the condition of stream habitat at the best monitoring sites.
